Hugo Stuven began his career in the audiovisual world working as a production assistant, floor manager, and assistant director in film. He soon made the leap to directing commercials, music videos, and making-of featurettes, where he started to shape his own narrative and visual style.
In 2014, he made his feature film debut with ANOMALOUS, a haunting psychological thriller shot in English between New York and Barcelona. Starring Lluis Homar, Christy Escobar, Edgar Fox, and Adria Arjona, the film won awards at numerous international festivals in New York, Houston, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain, establishing him as a new voice in auteur cinema.
His second feature film, SOLO (2018), starring Alain Hernández and Aura Garrido, tells a gripping true story of survival. Filmed entirely on the island of Fuerteventura, Stuven committed to extreme realism, shooting in natural locations without green screens or artificial effects. The film premiered at the 21st Málaga Film Festival and, after its theatrical release distributed by FILMAX, reached international audiences through Netflix.
In 2020, he revolutionized the documentary format with EL DESAFÍO: ETA, the first original documentary series produced by Amazon Prime Video in Spain. A historical journey with major visual and narrative impact, it received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. It marked the first time the Feroz Awards nominated a series in the category of “Best Documentary of the Year.” Hugo was also nominated for “Best Director” at the Iris Awards.
In 2021, he released SEVE on Prime Video, an intimate and emotional portrait of the life of Severiano Ballesteros. In 2022, two new projects arrived on the same platform: the documentary series REAL MADRID: THE WHITE LEGEND and the feature documentary ÁNGEL NIETO: THE MAN WHO DEFEATED TIME, further solidifying his prestige in the documentary genre.
In October 2025, he premieres DIME TU NOMBRE, his first horror series as creator, director, and writer (alongside screenwriters Alejandro Hernández and César de Nicolás). Starring Michelle Jenner, Darío Grandinetti, Elena Rivera, Younes Bouab, and Raúl Arévalo, the series is an Amazon Prime Video original production, produced by Espotlight Media (Los Farad) and Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead).
Just days after its release, DIME TU NOMBRE reached No. 1 on the Prime Video Spain ranking, confirming Stuven’s successful leap into serialized fiction and cementing a creative identity that is both distinctive and recognizable in the audiovisual landscape.
On July 24, 2026, his new feature film as director and co-writer, THE NEST, a psychological thriller produced by Filmax and starring Michelle Jenner, Luisa Gavasa, Pablo Derqui and the young debutant Dylan Radley, premieres in theaters. In the words of its director: “The Nest is a psychological thriller with a dense, watchful, almost oppressive atmosphere, fueled by the secrets everyone is hiding. And at the center of that emotional labyrinth is our protagonist (Michelle Jenner), whose precise and heartbreaking performance sustains the tension as if she were carrying the entire house on her shoulders. It walks the line between the intimate and the unsettling.”
Beyond his audiovisual career, Hugo Stuven has published two novels: THE LIGHTHOUSE OF LOST TEARS, a finalist for the prestigious Minotauro Award, and ANOMALOUS, inspired by his debut film.
As a pianist and composer, he has released his first album titled LOOP, available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, once again demonstrating his versatility and artistic sensitivity.
